Gelato, or the plural Gelati, is Italian ice cream. Though similar to ice cream, gelato is a taste sensation like no other dessert. Gelato is more than just a frozen dessert - it is an experience. You’ll find it impossible to hold back a smile when feasting on this creamy, chilled delight.
There are several differences that distinguish authentic gelato from the ice cream commonly found in the United States. While gelato has become synonymous with ice cream, gelato contains less air than typical ice cream, due to the unique process by which it is made, giving it a denser, creamier texture consistency. The denseness of gelato and the natural ingredients also aid in bringing out the intense flavorings. Another difference between gelato and ice cream is the temperature at which it is kept frozen. Our special display case keeps the pans at a constant temperature to maintain the proper semi-frozen consistency. The technical differences between gelato and ice cream also include varying ingredients and nutritional information. According to FDA guidelines, in order to call a frozen dessert ‘ice cream,’ a product must have a minimum of 10 percent butterfat. Most ice cream on the market has up to 20 percent butterfat, coming mostly from the use of heavy cream.
Our gelato flavors are made with whole milk in place of heavy cream and ranges from 4 to 8 percent butter fat content. And many of our water-based fruit flavors contain less than 2 percent vegetable fat, allowing for even more guilt-free pleasure.
